Pharaoh's workers - Villagers of the Valley
Looking at the evidence from over 3,000 years ago we will glimpse the working conditions, domestic activities and everyday lives of the artisans of the Valley of the Kings; not slaves as depicted in blockbuster films but very skilled craftsmen.

Literature: The End of Reason? 20th Century Visions of a Post-Modern World.
Has contemporary culture ceased to value reason? This course use novels by Huxley, Orwell and Kafka to examine the state of society today, addressing issues such as state and bureaucratic power, genetic engineering, and the rights of the individual.

Music for the 19th century theatre
This course will explore incidental music written for the 19th century theatre by composers such as Mendelssohn and Grieg, to plays as diverse as those by Shakespeare and Ibsen, discovering the relationship between music and literature in the Romantic age.
